Zum ersten Mal präsentiert gebürtiger New Yorker Chris Williams Konzertfotos, die er in mehr als 35 Jahren als Zeuge alternativer und experimenteller Musik gemacht hat. In stimmungsvollem Schwarzweiß fängt er die gewaltige Energie der „Sunday Hardcore Matinees“ im NYC-Punk-Club CBGB ein, leidenschaftliche Auftritte von US-Legenden wie Guided by Voices, Mission of Burma und Drive Like Jehu sowie hochkonzentrierte Momente des Tonbandflatterns und Reglerdrehens in der heutigen europäischen Avantgarde. Hardcore trifft auf Elektronik, Indie trifft auf Noise, und durch Fotos von lokalen Helden wie Rocket Freudental und Levin Goes Lightly wird eine Brücke von der Bowery nach Stuttgart geschlagen. Bei der Vernissage und einer Zwischenveranstaltung werden die Bilder von Musik begleitet, darunter handverlesene Schallplatten der porträtierten Künstler*innen und weiteren Protagonisten der internationalen Underground-Szene. For the first time, New York native Chris Williams publicly presents his concert photos, captured as a witness to more than 35 years of alternative and experimental music. In atmospheric black and white he captures the violent energy of “Sunday Hardcore Matinees” in the punk club CBGB, passionate performances by US legends like Guided By Voices, Mission of Burma, and Drive Like Jehu, and moments of concentrated tape flutter and knob twiddling from the present-day European avant-garde. Hardcore meets electronics, indie meets noise, and through photos of local heroes like Rocket Freudental and Levin Goes Lightly, the exhibition builds a bridge between the Bowery and Stuttgart. During the exhibition opening and a special listening session, hear hand-picked records from artists featured in the show and other protagonists in the international underground.
